5-Minute Presentation Reflection

What would you say stood out about your presentation performance and why?
I think what stood out the most was where my information came from. My interviewee has a long history in baking, and I was able to teach the class what I learned from her. I think that might have made my presentation a little more interesting because it came from my experience of working with her, instead of only research anyone could have looked up on their own.

What was the most challenging to do why?
I think the most challenging thing was trying to make sure I hit all the main points within the time. I was worried I would go over the 5 minutes so I might have gone through it too quick, looking over key points that could have enhanced my presentation.

Interview 1 Reflection

What is the most important thing I learned from the interview and why?
I learned that baking, like most things, is best done when you have a passion for it. This will lead to an enjoyable finish. Also, when doing different techniques, your "love  and care" needs to go into it. Baking can be seen as a form of art, and art needs inspiration, which also goes back to having a passion. With this, I believe, it can lead to success in the field.
If you don't have a passion for baking you definitely won't have a product others would want. Not having a passion is like saying you aren't trying to the fullest. Your not going to reach your greatest potential, so there wouldn't be any point to bake.

Blog 6

(1) Define possible terms in your EQ (e.g. successful, effective)
In my EQ, success could mean the bakery is up and running and produces a quality product that is enjoyable and affordable. There are no financial struggles. The bakery distribution part means selling your product out to others. Mainly meaning in bulk to other stores and companies, but could also refer to single customers in the bakery.

(2) So far based on your research, what are possible answers to your EQ?
In order to run a successful independent bakery distribution company you need dedication. Also you need a good, unique product that others want to buy, something that is your own.

(3) What has been your most important printed source and why?
The book "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" because it is teaching me about the business side of my topic. It's helping me learn about money in different ways, something I didn't know how I was going to find research for.

Blog 5- Independent Component 1

Independent Component 1:

1) Discuss possible ideas you have to complete this requirement?
I plan to take different business/entrepreneur type classes. I also plan to take baking classes, cooking classing, decorating classes, etc. I also want to try and attend at least one farmers markets and festival that the bakery I volunteer at attends.
2) How will these idea(s) help answer your EQ?

My EQ: What is most important to running a successful bakery distribution company?
By taking different business classes it will help me learn about the "running" and owning part of my EQ. It could also help me define success in a business view. The baking classes will help me learn a bakers role in a bakery. The farmers markets could give me one way that some bakeries distribute their products.

Interview Check-In

Who do you plan to interview? Why?
I plan to interview my baking instructor Chef Erin. She has been working in the culinary field for many years, so has a lot of background in baking and being a baker.

What more will you ask and why?
At what point did you realize that you wanted to pursue a career in the culinary arts?

When you first started, what did you enjoy the most, baking or cooking?

Did you ever consider owning a restaurant or bakery of your own?

Would you recommend this a a career?

I would like to know more about how she started baking/cooking and why she chose this as a career path. I'm hoping that it could help me relate to my topic better than just having an interest, and later be able to help others to relate to my topic.

5-Minute Rough Draft

Objective

  • Give students a better understanding of what bakery distribution is.
Procedure

     1. Introduction
    • Ask students if they have every been to a bakery before. If yes, what kind (mom and pop, chain) did they specialize in anything (cupcakes, decorating, chocolate). Ask if they ever see their products anywhere else. Ask what they think bakery distribution is.
     2. My definition of bakery distribution as it relates to my topic.
    • The selling of products to other companies. Larger orders of products being delivered. (to markets/stores)
     3. Where I did my summer service learning.
    • Old Town Baking Co.
      • A family owned bakery with over 16 years in business.
    • How it relates to distribution.
      • Distributes their products to markets, sports arenas, convention centers and hotels. Where they get most of their business.
     4. Conclusion
    • Why distribution?
      • It is one thing to just bake something and sell it in your own store, why not take it a step further and distribute that product. I figure there has to be a reason why other companies want to buy your products. I want to learn more about what makes a product good enough to distribute (how would you know) and how you can reach that point.
Check for Understanding

  • Ask students if they can give me a place they have been to or seen that distributes their products, based on the definition I explained.
  • Ask for questions or comments
Resources/Materials
  • Drawing of the distribution process. (?)
  • Pictures of different independent bakeries and known products that are distributed. (?)

Topic Choice

What is your topic?
My topic is owning your own bakery and product distribution.

Why did you choose this topic?
I chose this topic because I'm interested in business, and want to know what it takes to run one of your own. To make my topic more specific I chose the business to be a bakery, because I've always been interested in the "behind the scenes" of all those distinctive breads and pastries. I also want to direct my project toward the distribution of the bakery goods, because this is how many smaller or independent bakeries become success.

What do you hope to accomplish after studying this topic all year?
I am hoping to find out if this could be a possible career choice for me. By learning more about it and being involved in a lot of different areas within my topic I hope to find out if this is something I would enjoy doing full time.
